|David Adler, a left-wing academic writing in the New York Times this week revealed that in almost every country surveyed, it was the self-identifying "centrists" who are actually most against the people, and the idea of one-man, one-vote.
"Centrists" tend to be better off, with less impact on mass migration in their lives, and who have had a great financial run since the 2008 economic crash. Ordinary people paid them out of the mess they created, and now they're returning the favour by opposing the democratic choices they make. "Centrists" are also less likely to support free and fair elections, according to the data.
Now, you'll probably have noticed that every time I write the word centrist, I put it in scare quotes. That's because there's nothing particularly "centrist" about these people, apart from the fact that they pull from the totalitarian tendencies of both the furthest left and furthest right extremes. They are, in fact, totalitarians and tyrants themselves. Their philosophies aren't based in facts, arguments, statistics, or Western tradition. They are forced on people.
Think about what the German European Commissioner said this week about Italy: “The markets and a ‘darkened’ outlook will teach Italy’s voters not to vote for populist parties in the next elections.”
Think about what Juncker said in 2015: "There can be no democratic choice against the European treaties, one cannot exit the euro without leaving the EU."
Finally, think about what former Mexican President Vicente Fox said in April:
“I began to doubt how smart is democracy, because democracy’s not delivering. That’s why in Britain they’re not happy with what’s going on. You’re not happy with what’s going on in the United States, you’re not happy with what is going on in Mexico… I see, pretty soon, something different… some other way we’re going to perform governance, that we’re going to take decisions, and how we’re going to manage our countries”.
Forget the warnings about authoritarianism coming from the far left or far right. We've already slipped back into tyranny. It's just that some haven't realised it yet.
